Keep Calm and Audition
On Tuesday we had our cold read class. Three people didn’t make it, so I was only able to do one of my scenes (I get two this month 🙂 ), a comedy 😉 It’s a scene from Knocked Up, where I kind of get upset and yell at Nick. It was fun for a cold read, but I am anxious to put it up as a scene, where we both know our lines and can really be in the moment. Suzanna also had a theme going on, of breakups due to the manchild-ness of the guy. Very fun to watch. Since it was a smaller class, we did get…

Skipping Breakfast at Tiffany’s
After having so much fun at last month’s Brunch in the City, I decided to try it again and spent yesterday at the second Skipping Breakfast at Tiffany’s event. Unlike last time, when I went with Carolyne and knew people who would be there, I had absolutely no connection to anyone involved, and the friend I inadvertantly heard about it through didn’t even attend. Still, that in no way means I didn’t have a lot of fun 🙂 I decided to ease my way in by accepting an invitation to get my hair braided. They had Nüva, a beauty salon doing hair, nails and makeup, so I figured it would…

An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth by Chris Hadfield
I started this book knowing that I loved all of the Chris Hadfield quotes that I had found on the internet, and that my cousin had told me she found the book too technical for her to really enjoy it. Having just finished reading and watching the Astronaut Wives Club, I was actually kind of interested in seeing how space travel had changed, so the technical stuff didn’t bother me. As it turns out, a few pages into the very first chapter, I was hooked. I don’t know if it is because me pursuing an acting career is highly unlikely as well, but when he explained his theory on wanting…

A Different Kind of Audition-Style
Last night’s class had a lot of people missing, which always means the class will go over, because we are always so convinced that we have time, that we talk forever and work on the scenes longer. This week, we did go over, so much so that I left before the end of class, but we weren’t just talking off-topic, we were really working our scenes, doing exercises and getting rid of blocks. It was probably one of my best classes in a long time. I did my first take of the Private Practice scene as if it were any other month doing it audition-style, and watching it over it…

Auditioning for Comedy
Yesterday I had an audition/reading to see if I could actually do comedy. You see, I had a meeting with this Director/Writer/Producer at the end of August, and we seemed to hit it off, except that you generally need to be able to demonstrate some kind of acting ability before being cast. He had seen my demo reel, and liked the work I had done, but my demo reel and CV are both desperately lacking in the comedy department. This isn’t to say that I have never done comedy, but it is mostly in class settings, like in the following picture, from Michele and my’s first Tom Todoroff workshop 😉…

Subtext, Memories and Choices
After missing class last week, I got to do 2 scenes yesterday. Luckily, my teacher called to warn me that afternoon, because I had definitely not been working on the second one. I got to class early, as per my usual, and rehearsed the scene I was less familiar with a few times until we were pretty sure we had it. Then class started, and I went first, which I usually do, but my scene partners are never expecting it. I like to think of it as a vote of confidence, saying I know that you are always good and ready to go whenever I ask you to. Even if…

Callbacks and Chemistry Reads
In this case, I had a callback that doubled as a chemistry read. First, the terms: A callback is basically a second audition. After the people casting a project have seen everyone they are interested in, they will have a portion of those people come back and audition again. But a callback is not a chance to go in a different direction or try something new. You are expected to do exactly what you did the first time, which includes wearing the same clothes. And you are always expected to be ready to take direction. A chemistry read usually comes along later in the casting process, when they have already…

Brunch in the City
On Sunday, Carolyne and I attended Brunch in the City III, a networking event inspired by Sex and the City, geared towards #Girlbosses and combining fashion, food, manis, henna, makeup, networking and so much more. First of all, it is categorized as a fashion event, so Carolyne and I made sure to dress to impress 🙂    The clothes were gorgeous, and surprisingly affordable. I especially loved the fall collection at Female Department. If I had another event to go to where I wanted to dress to impress, and support an awesome female-run, Montreal company, that is where I would go 🙂 After the fashion, I very much enjoyed…

The First Ballet Class
So it is not technically my first class. This picture attests to the fact that as a tiny child, I was geared up to be a prima ballerina. Ballet classes as an infant were actually what got me potty trained. I wanted so badly to get into class with my cousin Chelsea, but they said you have to be potty trained and so then I was. Unfortunately, my ballet career did not last so long. We moved and I stopped taking classes and sporadically went back to it, but nothing really stuck. You would think that with that kind of determination I would have gone all the way, but looking…

Remember the Memory
You might have noticed a few new tabs in the menu. This is for two specific reasons, and I’m pretty sure at least one can be useful to you. If you are reading this because you think I’m pretty awesome, then you will be glad to see that I am going to be slowly expanding on the blog, to share more about my experiences, what I like and what inspires me. On the other hand, if you really enjoy one part of the blog and skim through my posts to get to the good stuff, then I am making things simpler for you. I will be working on sorting out…
