• Good News Comes in Threes, Right?

I have been told that bad news comes in 3s, so I am really hoping that the same could be said for good news, because I had 2 awesome things happen to me this week and have my fingers crossed for a third. First, I was offered a part in the slasher film I had auditioned for a few weeks ago. It wasn’t the role I auditioned for, but I was still really excited until I realized I would have to be ACTRA in order to accept it. I was slightly crushed when I responded that I was available and would love the part, but was unfortunately non-union. This didn’t…

  • Vocalizing Your Subtext

Yesterday in class, Suzanna continued with her exercises to get us to be consistently giving our best. Usually, the first take is like a warm up, and then every subsequent take gets better, with us really finding our way near the end of the scene. This week, we had to vocalize our subtext before she called action, so that everything that was supposed to be boiling inside of us was already out there and completely on our minds. To explain exactly what we were doing, we were basically given a minute or so to vent our frustrations, in character, before the scene started. Because life doesn’t happen in isolated scenes,…

  • It Isn’t Cold Until You Call Cut

The title of this post is in reference to my filming outside on Saturday night, and to the fact that it felt so much warmer between action and cut. It still was cold while we were filming, but you have so many other things on your mind, and you’re in the moment, so it doesn’t affect you as much. Also, everyone was super nice about the weather, letting me wear my jacket until the very last second, and hang out inside while they got everything ready. They also tried to take 5-10 minute breaks every once in a while, just so I could warm up before the next take. Wasn’t…

  • Keep Calm and Audition

On Tuesday we had our cold read class. Three people didn’t make it, so I was only able to do one of my scenes (I get two this month 🙂 ), a comedy 😉 It’s a scene from Knocked Up, where I kind of get upset and yell at Nick. It was fun for a cold read, but I am anxious to put it up as a scene, where we both know our lines and can really be in the moment. Suzanna also had a theme going on, of breakups due to the manchild-ness of the guy. Very fun to watch. Since it was a smaller class, we did get…

  • A Different Kind of Audition-Style

Last night’s class had a lot of people missing, which always means the class will go over, because we are always so convinced that we have time, that we talk forever and work on the scenes longer. This week, we did go over, so much so that I left before the end of class, but we weren’t just talking off-topic, we were really working our scenes, doing exercises and getting rid of blocks. It was probably one of my best classes in a long time. I did my first take of the Private Practice scene as if it were any other month doing it audition-style, and watching it over it…

  • Auditioning for Comedy

Yesterday I had an audition/reading to see if I could actually do comedy. You see, I had a meeting with this Director/Writer/Producer at the end of August, and we seemed to hit it off, except that you generally need to be able to demonstrate some kind of acting ability before being cast. He had seen my demo reel, and liked the work I had done, but my demo reel and CV are both desperately lacking in the comedy department. This isn’t to say that I have never done comedy, but it is mostly in class settings, like in the following picture, from Michele and my’s first Tom Todoroff workshop 😉…

  • Subtext, Memories and Choices

After missing class last week, I got to do 2 scenes yesterday. Luckily, my teacher called to warn me that afternoon, because I had definitely not been working on the second one. I got to class early, as per my usual, and rehearsed the scene I was less familiar with a few times until we were pretty sure we had it. Then class started, and I went first, which I usually do, but my scene partners are never expecting it. I like to think of it as a vote of confidence, saying I know that you are always good and ready to go whenever I ask you to. Even if…

  • Callbacks and Chemistry Reads

In this case, I had a callback that doubled as a chemistry read. First, the terms: A callback is basically a second audition. After the people casting a project have seen everyone they are interested in, they will have a portion of those people come back and audition again. But a callback is not a chance to go in a different direction or try something new. You are expected to do exactly what you did the first time, which includes wearing the same clothes. And you are always expected to be ready to take direction. A chemistry read usually comes along later in the casting process, when they have already…

  • Remember the Memory

You might have noticed a few new tabs in the menu. This is for two specific reasons, and I’m pretty sure at least one can be useful to you. If you are reading this because you think I’m pretty awesome, then you will be glad to see that I am going to be slowly expanding on the blog, to share more about my experiences, what I like and what inspires me. On the other hand, if you really enjoy one part of the blog and skim through my posts to get to the good stuff, then I am making things simpler for you. I will be working on sorting out…

  • Pyramids and Posters

I hope everyone has been having a lovely Labor Day Weekend! This year, my family did something a little different, and joined Sam’s family for a Corn Roast. We spent the day on a large stretch of land, hanging out on lawn chairs, playing drinking games, meeting new people and eating way too much delicious food. Also, at some point during the evening, people started comparing their athletic abilities, which led to our attempting yoga poses, and this pyramid… In other news, I have signed up for ballet lessons, starting this Wednesday, I have some exciting projects coming out, and there is a poster for Un Jour En Société, the…
